What’s your Game Plan to Resolution Success?
Too often, the week-long break between Christmas and New Year’s Day is when we settle on our resolutions for the upcoming year — little to no thought given to achieving and adopting these resolutions as lifestyle standards.
Who’s in the right mindset to commit to anything more than changing out of sweatpants during that holiday haze anyway?
A thoughtful game plan may be the difference between canceling your gym membership mid-January and changing your life – for the rest of your life.
As you sit down to strategize your goals, consider these four tips to resolution success:
Be Purposeful: Setting yourself up to be successful begins by thoughtfully identifying the areas in your life you would like to improve in 2022. The key is setting goals around your “wants” and not your “shoulds.” I want to lose 10 pounds is much more powerful than I should lose 10 pounds.
Give purpose to your New Year’s Resolutions and you’re more likely to turn motivation into routine. And routine lasts a lot longer.
Make a Game Plan: How are you going to attack your New Year’s Resolutions? Yes, attack, because you’re competing against yourself. For example: If you’re not a morning person, don’t schedule your workouts at 6:00 a.m. If you have a hard time eating right, meal prep rather than rely on your “motivation” to make the right choice when hunger strikes.
What’s the saying, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail? A thoughtful game plan sets you up for long-term success. Accentuate your strengths and understand your weaknesses.
Celebrate Small Victories: Whether your New Year’s Resolution is fitness related or not, it’s perfectly okay to celebrate small victories. Made it to the gym five days in a row? Celebrate within reason with your favorite treat. Wrote in your journal or practiced the piano for a week straight? Sounds like you’ve earned a weekend date night.
Make it fun and rewarding as you measure your progress.
The Right Tools: Having the right tools on hand for any project makes the job a lot easier. It’s no different with New Year’s Resolutions.
